From the tutorial

To begin with I felt it necessary to play around with my original model for the folie.  I made it so that it was a 3 storey building, playing with openings and the form.  The folie itself would make for a plain building, being all concrete, therefore I tried to introduce some curves into the design.
For the interior of the building I want to play around with my concept of Abandoned Beauty.  I want the patrons to feel like they are in a place that is for them, rather than a really public area.

I would like to also look at the concept of bringing the outside in and vice versa.  I want it to be like a wonderland on the inside somewhat like Alice in Wonderland.  It will be like a different world, with digital plants, and settings to make the user feel like they are walking in an amazing forest. The exterior of the building, would probably be kept plain.

Project 2 Task

The Assessment Criteria
  1. Design Concept: design concept and narrative of your Folie project is further investigated and successfully applied to your initial design proposal with your own unique design method.
Outcome: A series of diagrams and/or models
  2. Design Context: contextual understanding of site in relation to surrounding areas (CBD, New Farm, Kangaroo Point, Fortitude Valley) is clearly evident and can be traced back to issues you dealt with during Folie project.
Outcome: 1:5000 area plan, diagrams, and/or models describing relationships
  3. Design Tectonic: structural and tectonic aspects of your initial proposal are well and creatively investigated, and it clearly demonstrate that features developed in Folie project is investigated further and strong advancement/improvement is made.
    Outcome: diagrams, drawings and/or models
  4. Design Function: range of user activities relevant to your group theme is well understood and presented, and relationship to what was investigated in Folie project is evident.
Outcome: diagrams, story boards, video, animation, models and/or equivalent
  5. Design Contribution: social and cultural relevance of project direction (how it contributes to specific communities and society in general) is clear and well considered.
Outcome: diagrams, drawings, photographs and/or models
  6. Design Issue: your own interpretation of theme-specific architectural issue is strongly evident in your design.
Outcome: please discuss this with your theme leader
  7. Design Communication 1: project development is communicated effectively.
Outcome: Regular update of your Blog
  8. Design Communication 2: intal project proposal is communicated effectively.
    Outcome: Design Presentation.

Digitally Enhanced Buildings - Exterior Part 2

Glass and technology is growing fast, with more techniques being invented everyday.  The clip below shows the day in a life made of glass. An architects dream.

Another digital projection onto a building.  This is amazing as it really changes the complete look of the building.

This street art is becoming popular however this a creative optical illusion of making a 2D drawing into 3D.  The third dimension technology is all around us with televisions and live games being digitally enhanced to become 3D for the average person. The architect needs to work with this technology, in making differend dimensions with their design with creativity.

DIGITALLY ENHANCED SPACES

Immersive digital environments create an artificial, interactive computer generated world with which a user can envelop themselves in the artificial space. These environments are akin to virtual reality. The success of the environment depends on many factors such as believable three dimensional graphics, surround sound and interactive user-input.

Often the goal is to create an experience where the person is emotionally engaged by creating a sense of reality. Apart from the realism of the ‘space’ this sense of the created experience can be reinforced by use of tactile operations, control of the experience by the user or an emotional engagement by way of a narrative or story.

The aim of this project will be to create social spaces which are enhanced by digital environments.

THE DESIGN

The project is to be a contemporary Supper Club - café/bar/multi-function space. [Wikipedia – search Supper Club].  Supper Club’s can be in various guises. The of this design exercise is to explore the idea of casual/pop-up venues – intimate and discrete and appealing to a techno-savvy clientele.
By researching current and developing technologies, you are to develop a digitally enhanced environment and create a new sense of space and interaction for the customer.

Indicative Brief
  • café/bar space for 50-100 customers
  • a multi-function space
  • kitchen /bar/ server area
  • arrival space
  • Support rooms
  • Amenities

PROCESS

The folly is the starting point for your design. By researching and formulating a brief for the function, your design is to develop into a new form and find innovative solutions and incorporate digital technology to enhance the experience

Start – gather knowledge and appreciation of the design problem before developing a conceptual solution. Initially, information is to be gathered by group work before developing individual designs.
Understand – research the site, its context in the city, history and built forms, in order to establish a comprehensive awareness of the environment and how to respect and interact and be inspired by the site
Inform – research performance spaces, digital technologies, user experiences and expectations with a focus on being able to understand how digital technology can affect, create, augment and express an artificial environment.
Explore – start with large block planning and forms, develop designs that fit the context and brief
Test – draw, model and illustrate the spaces and facilities that will become the essence of the user experience
Merge – bring together all the information to a comprehensive design and develop the detail
Finalise – illustrate the design by way of 2D/3D drawings and models
